Cuisine American
- 1 pound hot breakfast sausage cooked and drained
- 1 bag frozen tater tots about 32 ounces
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
- Cooking spray for greasing the baking dish
Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Cook the sausage
Add the breakfast sausage to a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease.
Mix the casserole filling
In a large bowl, combine the cooked sausage, frozen tater tots, cheddar cheese, and mozzarella cheese. Stir gently until everything is evenly mixed.
Add to the baking dish
Spread the tater tot and sausage mixture evenly into the prepared 9x13-inch baking dish.
Make the egg mixture
In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
Pour over the casserole
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the tater tot mixture, making sure it reaches all areas of the baking dish.
Bake
Bake uncovered for about 1 hour, or until the eggs are set and the top is golden brown.
Rest before serving
Let the casserole rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
- You can use mild breakfast sausage instead of hot sausage if you prefer less spice.
- For extra flavor, add cooked bacon, diced ham, green onions, or sautéed bell peppers.
- Do not thaw the tater tots before baking. They can go straight into the casserole frozen.
- If the top browns too quickly before the center is set, loosely cover the dish with foil near the end of baking.
- Letting the casserole rest before slicing helps it hold together better.
