So, this is how you spell it:  Shepherd’s Pie.  But, from doing a quick google search, it came to my attention that TONS of people think it’s Shepards Pie.

Shepherd’s pie is a comforting dish consisting of creamy mashed potatoes on top of a rich and bubbly stew. It originated in the UK and Ireland and is traditionally made with lamb, but in the U.S. it is more commonly made with beef (and referred to as cottage pie). While the original version is made with leftover stew, modern recipes typically call for ground meat, which cooks quickly and doesn’t require leftovers

Ingredients

  • 1 lb of browned and seasoned ground beef
  • 2 cups of hot mashed potatoes (I used ones already made)
  • ½ package of cream cheese (4 ounces)
  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cloves of garlic (I used the minced garlic)
  • 4 cups of frozen vegetables (that have been thawed)
  • 1 cup of beef gravy in a jar

How To Make Shepherd’s Pie

  1. Preheat oven to 375F
  2. Mix potatoes, cream cheese, garlic, and ½ of the shredded cheese together
  3. Mix the mixed vegetables, gravy, and meat together
  4. Put the vegetable, meat, gravy mixture into a 9″ square baking dish
  5. Cover vegetable mixture with the mashed potato mixture
  6. Take the remaining ¼ cup of shredded cheese and cover the potatoes
  7. Bake uncover in the preheated oven for 20 minutes
  8. Enjoy

SHEPHERD’S PIE SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS

POTATOES: You could also use red potatoes or Yukon Gold potatoes. If you are in a hurry, you can also use instant mashed potatoes or pick up pre-made mashed potatoes from the store. If you enjoy sweet potatoes, you could even try making this with mashed sweet potatoes.

MEAT: You can also use ground lamb as your ground meat in this hearty dish. Another option is for when you have leftover pot roast. This is a great recipe to use it up!

VEGGIES: You can add mushrooms to the list of veggies if you’d like. You can also switch up the frozen veggie mix that you use or use fresh veggies if you prefer.

CHEESE: If you are a cheese lover, try adding shredded sharp cheddar cheese to the top of the mashed potatoes. You could even just try adding this to half of the dish.
